TEAM

Passion for the community

We are a group of over 14 motivated people in Dresden having one wish in common – bringing TEDx alive in our city!

Who is behind TEDxDresden?

Our work is voluntary and driven by passion for the community. Our backgrounds are as diverse as the ideas we want to spread: medicine, engineering, international relations, psychology, IT, physics and music.

We love it when people engage with society – it's at the heart of our work to make our audience understand and reflect the aspects of the future that we'll be challenged with. The aim of our motto “Embrace the Future” this year, is to convey an optimistic view to our participants how they can successfully shape their very own future.

Since it is our first conference, we founded a Hochschulgruppe (campus group) and the non-profit association “Verein zur Förderung und Verbreitung herausragender Ideen e.V.” (VR9682) as a framework for the event – no member-fees attached but lots of fun!

You can read more about it on our Associations page.

We’ll do our best to make TEDxDresden 2017 a huge success and an unforgettable experience. Hope to see you all soon!

History of TEDxDresden

In late 2015, a group of TED-enthusiastic students had the idea of bringing the popular TEDx event eventually to Dresden. We had no initial capital and little experience or professional contacts. However, we had plenty of passion for our idea. The non-profit US-parent organization TED LLC granted us a license for the first TEDxDresden, which started as a small event with only 100 participants. We founded the non-profit association “Verein zur Förderung und Verbreitung herausragender Ideen e.V.” as a legal framework.

The event preparation, with all its ups and downs, has been an amazing experience for our team. Our first TEDxDresden conference with the motto “The Social Turn” took place on September 11, 2016, in the Societaetstheater. Speakers from the Netherlands, Berlin, Pirna, and Dresden presented their ideas how to foster social cohesion. The positive feedback for the event was just overwhelming. The participants praised the innovative talks and inspiring atmosphere. People asked us to organize another conference and offer more seats.

To get a license for a bigger TEDx event (>100 participants), we sent Christoph, the head of our non-profit association, to San Francisco. He participated in the TED Women conference and took part in the required TEDx workshop. Fortunately, more enthusiasts joined our team, and we were ready to take off for TEDxDresden 2017. The number of people and local partners that have started supporting us was encouraging. Especially university students were familiar with TED.

We hosted a TEDxSalon event on June 22 at the Technische Universität Dresden inviting Professor Chokri Cherif and Professor Peter Birkholz who gave precious insights into their cutting-edge research. Moreover, 14 student groups pitched their ideas to the audience. A great kick-off event for 2017!

We realized that TEDx is more than a simple series of talks. It is a great opportunity to bring people together who are engaged in their community and to motivate others.

This will also be the main objective for our future events.

We live in a very exciting time, with developments and opportunities coming at us at an impressive pace. We want to have a say in the way we shape the future, embrace it, instead of letting it engulf us.

TEDx offers us the opportunity to create this very special moment. This moment when inspiration and empathy come together such that our hearts and our minds get deeply opened.

Inspiration. Exciting ideas. Taking up these ideas, developing and spreading them with a sense of awareness and curiosity. Seeing things from a different perspective. A little more us, a little more courage for a vision, a little more boldness to embrace.

I think of progress as a responsibility. Our this year’s motto, Embrace the Future, thus means to me becoming aware of future problems on the one hand, and facing them proactively with a good amount of optimism on the other.

I like to think about the future in an unbiased way. It’s up to me whether I’m optimistic about it or not. No doubt, I’ll be amazed at what is yet to come. A strong reason to live and learn.
