Anna Merkulova is the choreographer and first soloist at the Semperoper-Ballet in Dresden.
Born in Ukraine, Anna has traveled the world for her passion to dance ballet. Among others, she danced in the USA, Estland, and Denmark, before she came to Dresden in 2006. After years of hard work, she has been appointed to the first soloist in 2015. Anna completed her training as a ballet dancer at the ballet school of Donezk, Ukraine. From a very young age on, she participated in international competitions, whereby she won the 2nd prize at the International Dancing Competition in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in 1994 and made it to the finals of the International and Modern Dancing Competition in Nagoya, Japan.
To her vast repertoire belong famous ballet roles like Julia in “Romeo and Julia” and Manon in the correspondent piece by K. MacMillan. Moreover, Anna's own creations from her work as a choreographer were brought onto the stage of the Semperoper. Particularly, her performance of the role Titania in the ballet “The Dream” by Frederick Ashton, which was shown at the Semperoper in 2018, was celebrated by the critics.
In her daily work, Anna directly perceives how demanding ballet dancing is for body and mind. After a couple of injuries, she, therefore, started to face these challenges in a more mindful manner. She found ways to cope with the high demand that comes along with her job. Based on these experiences, Anna wants to help others to cope with similar difficulties and to find a better way to treat oneself.
